The Mid West’s capital which evokes nostalgic nuances of post-colonial America, its resource-rich, raw-materials trading pre-constitutional history conjuring up images of the hopes of the future brought by the railroad to the sun belt, and the export of grains, foodstuffs, roadstone and what are now considered to be very valuable commodities to the old world in order to power the industrial revolution.

Chicago’s illustrious trading history paved the way for it to become the exchange-traded commodities and futures center of the world, carving out an identity which has lasted 240 years, the city now being at the leading edge of electronic derivatives trading, and home to vast institutions including CME Group, CBOE, IntercontinentalExchange and Cantor Futures Exchange.

Today, with the advancement of the electronic trading environment in North America being at a global high, a new dynamic is emerging once again, this time the angling of electronic futures exchanges toward ever more discerning retail customers, via highly advanced dedicated platforms which connect to centralized venues.

Some of the large institutions are reinventing their product range to follow the Amazon-style shopping experience in the case of CBOE LIVEVOL which launched its new Data Shop service, with an entirely new website last week, with retail traders absolutely in mind.

Others include technology providers, such as Trading Technologies, one of America’s most prominent trading software vendors, which reinvented itself after 20 years in order to innovate rather than institutionalize.

One thing is for sure. America represents the very forefront of sophistication, and to go with it, so do its industry leaders, who convened in Chicago in April at the FinTech Exchange 2016 event, hosted by Barchart.

Here are some anecdotes from our perspective, and a display of those who continue to make such engaging discussion and interesting developments happen.
