The two companies aim to develop new technologies that improve online security.

GMO Pepabo Inc (TYO:3633), a part of GMO Internet, is pushing further into the online security field thanks to a partnership with cyber security expert Cocon Inc.

The two companies will conduct joint research in a variety of areas, including security log analysis and artificial intelligence (machine learning). In addition, both companies have the aim of developing new technologies in the area of online security.

There will be three working groups (WGs) and each of them will have a set of specific tasks. Thus, the Security WG will explore the use of electronic certificates, TLS 1.3 compliance, TLS / SSL security issues, and various web security matters. Another working group will explore how to apply extremely fast log processing infrastructure, as well as next-generation monitoring by telemetry, and abnormality detection by log analysis. A third working group will study AI (machine learning) matters, such as user behavior prediction, natural language processing, and possible improvement to recommendation systems.

The collaboration with Cocon Corporation adds to the recent expansion of GMO Internet into the information security sector. Let’s recall that, in August this year, GMO Internet unveiled the launch of an information security business – GMO Pepabo Guardian. The new business will develop apps for the safe use of Internet, as well as all-in-one solutions for corporate clients. There will be collaborations with related businesses.

In March 2018, GMO Internet presented its plans to establish “Group Information Security Audit Office” which aims to strengthen information security management and audit function in the entire group. The goal is to protect important customer information from increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks. The company also seeks to improve information security literacy and to foster security personnel.
