South StreamSerbia signs South Stream next week, says a message on the website of the Russian gas giant Gazprom. The agreement that has been reached at a meeting between the President of Gazprom Alexey Miller and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Serbia to Russia Slavenka Terzic. They discussed bilateral cooperation in the gas sphere, the topic for the realization of the “South Stream” has occupied a central place in the talks. In Serbia, currently runs the tender for selection of contractor, it is clear from the message of Gazprom.

European Union stopped the negotiations for South Stream, before it is fit with the EU law. Serbia is still not a member of the EU, but has already started negotiations, hence the certain obligations for the country. From January 1st, 2015 Belgrade must meet the requirements listed in the Third energy package aimed at the liberalization of the energy market in the community. The gas pipe “South Stream” has been criticized precisely for non-compliance in this package relating to third party access to infrastructure, and the requirement that the owner of the network can not be a major supplier of raw material on it.

Earlier today, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Serbian counterpart Ivica Dacic in Belgrade. After the meeting, both parties argued that there is no change in the commitments related to the construction of the pipeline. Serbian Foreign Minister stated that his country does not need to make choices “or the EU or Russia.”
