Travelex set to make its UK International Money Transfer Service available by the end of the month

Maria Nikolova

The company claims it makes progress in testing the systems that support its UK high street banking partners.

Travelex has earlier today published an announcement regarding the latest developments regarding the cyber incident that has prompted it to take down its systems and to provide foreign exchange services on a manual basis.

Below is the text of the latest update:

“We continue to take positive steps forward. Our first customer-facing systems in the UK are now live. We are therefore serving customers electronically in our UK stores and in some of our UK retail partner locations and expect to begin testing in some Travelex branches outside the UK this week. Customers in UK airports will also be able to access our VAT refund services. This is part of our phased approach to the global restoration of our systems.

Throughout our recovery, our priority is to ensure that our systems are brought back up in a controlled, secure and managed way. In addition, we continue to make progress in testing the systems that support our UK high street banking partners. Travelex is also making good progress on restoring its proprietary UK International Money Transfer Service, which will be available by the end of the month.

We would like to thank our customers for supporting us and confirm we will continue to restore our systems as quickly as possible”.

Earlier in January, the company confirmed that the software virus affecting its systems is ransomware known as Sodinokibi, also commonly referred to as REvil. Travelex says that whereas there has been some data encryption, there is no evidence that structured personal customer data has been encrypted.

Although Travelex does not yet have a complete picture of all the data that has been encrypted, there is still no evidence to date that any data has been exfiltrated.

At present, the company is working towards recovery of all systems. Travelex says it has been able to restore a number of internal systems, which are operating normally. The company is working to resume normal operations as quickly as possible.
