Web3 and blockchain firm 0G has officially released its Testnet Newton v2, which it says would help make AI services “a public good” through large-scale storage for decentralized artificial intelligence systems.

0G launches Testnet Newton v2 for large-scale AI systems

Per its press release, this new version introduces a host of new features, stability fixes, and security enhancements, building on the foundation laid by the first iteration of the 0G testnet.

0G achieves high scalability for decentralized data by introducing the first “data availability system with a built-in general-purpose storage layer.” This system separates the workflow of data availability into two lanes: a publishing lane and a storage lane. The blockchain system, responsible for decentralized publishing and tracking, handles only a small amount of data. This design avoids broadcast bottlenecks while ensuring storage remains decentralized wherever the data resides.

Following the success of Testnet v1, which saw active community engagement with over 600,000 wallets registered, Testnet Newton v2 addresses the need for a more scalable network.

Testnet Newton v2 operates as a Cosmos-based proof-of-stake chain, offering greater scalability and interoperability. It includes new modules for data availability services and a committee to maintain high performance and reliability, ensuring that data is accessible and boosting the network’s functionality.

Additional features in v2 include advanced monitoring features to support tracking of services such as storage nodes and key-value stores. Improved mechanisms have been implemented to mitigate abuse of the testnet’s faucet system.

“Testnet v2 is more than just an upgrade; it’s a testament to the vibrant 0G community,” said Michael Heinrich, Co-Founder and CEO of 0G. “The overwhelming response to v1, with over 600,000 registered wallets, underscored the need for a more robust and scalable network. Testnet v2 delivers on that promise, introducing key features like data availability services and a rigorous validator selection process to ensure a secure and performant platform.”

Community interest in the 0G testnet led to more than 2,500 validator applications. The 121 selected validators were chosen to maximize testnet integrity.

Next on its roadmap, 0G says Testnet Newton v2 will continue to evolve with a focus on detecting and mitigating plagiarism to ensure the originality of contributions. New mechanisms have been implemented to prevent plagiarism, while flexible policies for validator rotation will be developed to attract newcomers and secure the 0G network.

0G is a Web3 infrastructure provider building a modular AI blockchain to implement on-chain AI applications in the Web3 ecosystem. The platform achieves high data availability through its architecture and touts its throughputs of 50 GB/second as 50,000 times faster than competitors, and costs 100 times lower.
