How a 23-Year-Old Became a Web3 Venture Capital Whiz

While most entrepreneurs his age are capitalizing on the tech industry to build their careers, Mads Pedersen is actively reshaping the future of it — at just 23 years old. Fueled by a rich, multicultural upbringing, a passion for decentralized technology, and an approach to venture capitalism that’s anything but conventional, he’s making strategic investments with the goal of making the internet more secure, transparent, and user-oriented.

Learn more about Pedersen’s journey into venture capitalism, how he became a champion for an inclusive and empowering digital environment, and how he’s funding the future of a user-driven internet.

The Foundation of a Free-Thinking Global Citizen

It takes a rich, storied background to make societal change on a grand scale — a background that Mads Pedersen has in spades. Born in Denmark and having spent his formative years in Malaysia and Portugal, he was exposed to diverse societal and technological environments. He witnessed governmental corruption in Malaysia and economic instability in Portugal, experiencing firsthand the challenges and inefficiencies of centralized systems (where all control and decision-making are handled by a single authority).

Seeing these centralized systems fail so profoundly instilled in Pedersen a strong belief in the need for systems that empower rather than control individuals. This line of thinking invariably led him directly to the principles of technology like Web3.

But what is Web3?

Web3: Placing the Internet Back in the Hands of the People

The internet is not a static technology — it grows and evolves right alongside society. The current iteration of the internet is Web2, characterized by the dominance of platforms like Google and Facebook, which inevitably control vast amounts of user data (not to mention the digital economy).

Web3, on the other hand, would be a significant evolution from Web2, shifting away from an internet controlled by centralized entities like corporations and governments and toward a decentralized platform where power and control are distributed among its users.

This decentralization is made possible thanks to blockchain, a technology that can be likened to a digital notebook that no one can erase or rewrite. Every entry is a new transaction, and because everyone has a copy, hacking the system is virtually impossible. This tech is fundamental to Web3 because it allows data to be managed collectively rather than by a single entity, empowering users to take control of their data privacy, protect their identities, and retain custody of their digital assets.

One such benefit of Web3 that’s close to Pedersen’s heart as a global citizen is its ability to facilitate cross-border payments. Traditional financial systems make these international transactions cumbersome, expensive, and slow, thanks to the multiple intermediaries involved and the inevitable lengthy processing times. But Web3 promises to enable direct, peer-to-peer transactions that are instantaneous and cost-effective — without the need for a traditional bank. This would effectively open global commerce to the masses, making it accessible and inclusive and inevitably enhancing economic participation.

All of this may sound incredible, but the internet is still stuck in Web2. However, if Web3 champions like Pedersen have to say anything about it, the world will soon adapt to this more secure, transparent system and bring about a safer digital age. And with the blockchain market expected to grow from $27.84 billion in 2022 to $825 billion in 2032, these champions just might succeed.

The Journey of a Young Investor

Pedersen’s early career started during college, when he was first introduced to the potential of digital assets. “When I was first properly introduced to crypto, he says, “I was, like, oh my God. This is it. This is actually what makes sense. This is going to change the world.”

His first significant investment was in a project created by his mentor, who was building a platform that would allow users to purchase fractional ownership of fine art via the blockchain. Discovering he had a passion for working with entrepreneurs, he found work with a venture fund called Inception Capital, and it was there his career took off.

During his time at Inception Capital, Pedersen deployed 15% of the fund (about $80 million) into some of the strongest early-stage crypto projects in the Web3 space. These promising projects were pushing boundaries both inside and outside the crypto space, including entities like Puffer Finance, Movement Labs, Camp Network, Sofamon, and Talus — organizations that have already generated millions of dollars in returns.

But his work as an investor is only one facet of his career. Partnering with industry leaders, he’s published research articles on emerging trends in the industry. He’s judged hackathons and spoken at conferences. He’s been invited to speak on virtual panels to discuss the future of Web3.

The Challenges of Youth

However, it isn’t all sunshine and roses. There’s still the matter that Pedersen is only 23 years old. While his success at such a young age is nothing short of admirable, his career is not without its challenges.

“I’m often interacting with colleagues and founders who are significantly older and more experienced than I am,” Pedersen says plainly. “I find myself investing in the work of founders who have extensive industry experience, which at times can make it challenging to earn their respect and convince them of my value.”

But Pedersen leans into his youth and leverages it to his advantage. His age allows him to connect with younger founders, which are an increasingly common phenomenon as technology advances at an exponential rate. And when he’s working with seasoned founders, he can provide unique perspectives on emerging trends and strategies for marketing to a younger audience.

He also has a better understanding of how his target market thinks. This is especially beneficial since a large proportion of crypto users are young adults, but it’s this generation that also treasures the core principles of decentralized technology. As today’s youth values trust and authenticity above all else, which are both crucial components of a successful Web3 environment, Pedersen knows what it takes for the modern tech startup to reach widespread adoption among younger users.

Mads Pedersen’s Continued Role in the Future of Web3

Mads Pedersen’s journey serves as a testament to the power of combining youthful insight with strategic foresight. At just 23, he’s made significant contributions to the Web3 ecosystem and has leveraged his global citizenship and tech acumen to drive meaningful change.

He’s since moved on from his work at Inception Capital and will be joining Figment Capital as an Investment Partner, where he’ll continue to shape the future of the internet and work toward a transparent, secure digital ecosystem. His goal is to support the brightest minds in tech and push the boundaries of what’s possible with blockchain — from secure transactions to apps that enhance digital identity and data sovereignty. By empowering business owners to pursue these aims, Pedersen hopes to ensure that the world’s rights and freedoms are preserved (and even enhanced) in the digital realm.

As Web3 continues to evolve, Pedersen’s influence will undoubtedly play a crucial role in ensuring it remains true to its core principles of decentralization and user empowerment.
