ESMA’s Steven Maijoor steps down to join Dutch Central Bank

He joined ESMA from the Dutch financial watchdog AFM, where he spent seven years establishing an independent capital market oversight. Responsibilities included overseeing the integrity of financial markets, prospectuses & public offerings, financial reporting, and auditing.

Steven Maijoor will step down from ESMA in order to join the Governing Board of the Dutch Central Bank, where he will be responsible for banking supervision, effective 1 April 2021.

Chair of the Board of Supervisors of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) since 2011, Steven Maijoor has a long track record as a board member and chairperson of various financial supervisory authorities.

He joined ESMA from the Dutch financial watchdog AFM, where he spent seven years establishing an independent capital market oversight. Responsibilities included overseeing the integrity of financial markets, prospectuses & public offerings, financial reporting, and auditing.

Prior to that, Mr. Maijoor was the Dean to School of Business Economics at Maastricht University and worked as a Professor since 1994. He graduated in business economics at the University of Groningen and obtained a doctorate from Maastricht University in this field.

Mr. Maijor will take over the responsibilities of Frank Elderson, who was appointed as a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) on 15 December 2020.

He has extensive experience as a board member of supervisory authorities, both in the Netherlands and in a European context. His vast national and international network will contribute to the effectiveness of DNB as a supervisor of the Dutch financial sector and our cooperation in European banking supervision within the ECB’s Single Supervisory Mechanism.”

At the DNB’s Governing Board, Steven Maijoor will supervise European banks, national institutions, and on-site supervision and banking expertise, horizontal functions and integrity, and legal services.

The Minister of Finance and the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations have approved Mr. Maijoor’s remuneration in excess of the ceiling referred to in the Public and Semi-Public Sector Executives Remuneration (Standards) Act (WNT).
