Binance founder CZ makes first public appearance post-prison in Dubai

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao made his return to the crypto stage at Binance Blockchain Week in Dubai on Thursday. He addressed a packed crowd in his first public appearance since his release from a U.S. prison last month.

Zhao, who served a four-month sentence after pleading guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act, received a standing ovation as he stepped onto the stage, with many attendees capturing the moment on their phones.

With over 4,000 attendees at the Dubai event and 1 million more tuning in online, Zhao’s return and insights on the future of crypto drew attention.

The session kicked off on a lighthearted note with Altcoin Daily founder Austin Arnold asking, “How was your summer?” Zhao’s response turned serious as he reflected on the impact of his prison time, describing it as a restrictive experience that gave him “a lot of time to reflect.”

Despite his release, Zhao said he has no plans to return to running a crypto exchange, citing the strain and the complexity of his sentencing process. He remarked that he was the first to serve prison time over a Bank Secrecy Act violation, a unique outcome compared to recent settlements with financial institutions that did not include individual charges.

During his speech, Zhao touched on the evolving political climate in the U.S., with both presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, now openly discussing crypto on the campaign trail. Reflecting on his prison experience, Zhao quipped, “I’m just sitting in prison like, ‘What the hell happened? What if I waited for two months?’”

Looking forward, Zhao shared his focus on Giggle Academy, an educational platform he introduced last year. The project aims to reach underserved communities worldwide, particularly the 700–800 million adults who are illiterate, including 300–500 million children who lack access to formal schooling. “Educational projects usually target areas with existing education systems,” he said.

Beyond education, Zhao said he’s actively investing in sectors like artificial intelligence, biotech, and blockchain. Meanwhile, his successor, Binance CEO Richard Teng, touted “momentum” as the theme for the upcoming year, pointing to regulatory progress like the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs as signs of positive industry growth.
